Websites awarded for excellence in accessibility
Websites awarded for excellence in accessibility – This is a bit mad as as far as I can tell the egg.com doesn’t even validate – it doesn’t have a dtd so the html may be vaild but who can tell. You can’t alter the text size either which is pretty basic for accessibility. In fact only one of the sites validates. I know validation doesn’t mean accessibility but it’s going in the right direction. Mind you the DRC site itself doesn’t validate either.
It has to be said accessibility is in the eye of the beholder and any accessibility validation that is done depends a lot on who is doing it. The things I try and keep in mind is the way the information on the page is ordered so when screen readers read it, it all makes sense. The other thing is using % rather than px for font sizes this is the easiest thing in the world to do.
Many designers design fixed width pages so that if you change the text size it alters the flow of the page and makes it a right mess. This is something designers should take into account when designing pages. In my experince designers sometimes seem to work in a bubble and expect the developer to sort out any problems with the way the design translates into html.
One of the best sites I have come across for accessibilty resources is the RNIB Web Access Centre. It has a directory of sites that have earned the ‘See if right’ logo so you can get ideas on how to a make sites more accessible. It also a ‘Check Points and Techniques’ section that provides information on web accessibility.
